Summer is the perfect time to embrace sandals and give your feet the freedom to breathe. Some people may experience issues in wearing a new pair of sandals, however there are several steps you can take to enjoy your sandals comfortably. Here’s how:

1. Finding the Right Fit

Choosing the right size and style of sandals for your foot shape is key to preventing discomfort.

Measure your feet properly – Make sure your sandals fit well, leaving a little room for natural foot movement without being too loose.

Consider foot swelling – Feet can swell in high temperatures, after exercise, or even after a long flight. Shoes that feel snug in the morning might feel too tight later in the day.

Pick the right strap style – If you need more support, opt for styles like gladiator sandals or those with adjustable ankle straps. They distribute pressure more evenly across the foot, reducing the chance of rubbing.

Avoid overly tight straps – Straps that are too tight can cause more friction, especially on warm days. Loosen them slightly to allow your feet some breathing room without sacrificing security.

2. Break in Your Sandals Before Wear

New sandals, like any new footwear, need a break-in period.

Wear them for short periods (2–3 hours) at home before taking them out for a full day.

Even soft leather sandals have seams and reinforcements that need time to soften and mould to your feet.

Breaking them in gradually reduces the risk of blisters when worn for extended periods.

3. Reducing Friction & Preventing Blisters

If you are prone to blisters or feel some rubbing while wearing sandals, try these solutions:

Use a barrier – Wearing a sock while breaking in new sandals can help soften straps and prevent chafing.

Apply an anti-blister stick – These create a protective layer on the skin to reduce friction.

Use talc-free body powder – This helps keep feet dry, reducing the combination of moisture and friction that causes blisters.

Apply Vaseline – A thin layer on the straps can help them glide smoothly over your skin.

If you do develop blisters, use blister plasters (with or without gel) to protect the affected area and allow healing.

4. Give Your Feet a Break

Avoid wearing the same pair of sandals on consecutive days. Giving your feet time to recover can help prevent soreness and irritation.
